A kid accidentally packed a beer in his lunch, reported it to the teacher, and was punished. Good stuff. http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/national_world&id=9445255
This is a shitty deal all around. Nothing else the teacher could do if they want to keep their job. Perhaps the principal could have cut some slack, but their hands may well have been tied as well. Only the director can amend zero tolerance offenses, and they may only be able to do that with school board approval.
Zero tolerance is stupid as hell. It's only to take pressure off wimp ass administrators that don't want to think or take a stand on anything, so that nothing falls back on them.
Right thing for the teacher to do would've been to drink it and dispose of the evidence - and good god is that a high school or a small college?
I didn't defend it. However, if it's a policy, it's a policy- right or wrong. You want to keep your job? The teacher has to report it. Now, I'm all for laying this at the feet of the upper administration, but the teacher & principal probably had few, if any, options.
I wasn't directing that at you but at the stupidity that is zero tolerance. The teacher covered their ass, but I'd say the principal could have just poured the beer out and threw it away, and that would have been the end of it.
Should have brought in some MD 20/20. A little bit of mad dog wine with lunch is always a classy touch.
