I'm needing to order some SQL Server Enterprise licenses and look at these prices:

    Per Processor: $27,495.00

    Server: $8,592.00

    CAL: $164.00

Yeah, you read that right....PER PROCESSOR.

It's expensive either way, but the 'per processor' option makes more sense to someone hosting a webserver since it's a one time all inclusive (server/client) fee. If you aren't on the level of Amazon.com or someone like that the server and CAL options are the way to go. Still expensive though.

the "per processor" requirement could get really expensive on motherboards with multiple CPU sockets. however, I'm pretty sure I've read that a multi-core processor doesn't count according to Microsoft.

Correct...it's per socket in reality. These days everything is multi-core and that would be a pretty steep price. Just found out that one of my sister projects ordered $500k worth of SQL licenses. What a waste of money...
