PREDICT: TN vs WVU (Prediction thread)

The optimism is getting the better of me, but I just feel good about this game. I think it’s a combination of WVU neither being a particularly talented nor accomplished team, and the sensing that despite last season’s debacles, that Tennessee likely has better starting talent from top to bottom + a competent coaching staff + I don’t think WVU knows what they’re getting in Tennessee. Hell, Tennessee may not know what they’re getting in Tennessee.

The Wildcards that will determine this game are:

1. How well can Tennessee’s secondary holdup. Can they avoid the big play, over the top, and can their front 7 help by bringing consistent pressure.

2. Can Guarantano play smart - e.g. managing the offense / game well, getting the ball out of his hand in time, taking what they give him and not forcing the ball. And, of course, how much help will he get from the oline and running game. I don’t doubt that Tennessee will be committed to the run, but can’t predict how effectively and productively the results will be.

Everything suggests that WVU has much greater room for error, should win this game, and probably handily - and Tennessee will have to play above it’s head and probably damned close to error free. But I just think that this staff will scheme them up with a surprise here and there, so as to both frustrate and tighten WVU, but which also allows our guys to play fast and not simply reactively, so as to give them enough momentum to make a game of it.

If Tennessee can avoid the big scoring plays, can have consistent success on offense (even moderate) and not allow WVU to jump out and on them...I think Tennessee will win.

Offense should be simple.
Bloody their nose with the run. Dont ask too much from the QB. Given your WR some chances deep.

Defense is the question for me. Is the DL good enough to get after Grier without a sending extras. If UT has to blitz much to disrupt WV they will hit a few big ones. Our secondary is a big unknown even with better coaching and more attention from the HC.
