The Dutch had the advantage of scoring their 3 goals with each player having an acre of space in the box. Our back line was always the worse part of this team and they reminded us today.
It is a 90 minute game and the difference between 1 goal or more often is down to how much risk you are willing to take. And how polished you are in set pieces. Sure we don't have a finisher but we are strategically not pressing for goals which is part of the issue. We choose to play a style where we are really only all out attacking when we are already losing so the opposition is all out defending.
I agree with you. Felt like we played their game today. I’m just pointing out the general note that we never scored more than a single goal in a game the entire tournament. That we made it through the group stage without giving up a goal during play is probably more of an anomaly than because of our defensive excellence (as seen on full display today).
Wish Pulisic's first shot wasn't straight at the keeper. Could have opened the game up early. We had a path to victory today but this was the most likely outcome.
I have no problem with the balance of play. We just lost our composure on defense a couple times, and the Dutch were ruthless to punish it. The scoreline was more lopsided than Belgium 2014, but we felt so much more involved in the game. With that and the youth on this side, the future looks bright.
It is bright. 2026 will have a mix of new talent and veterans from this campaign while still not being an old team. Find a striker, and establish lines that play together.
