I'm all for some extreme stunts like skydiving, wingsuit flying, etc. but this is guy must be crazier than a sh*t house rat. News from The Associated Press
Not sure. His descending with a balloon and suit are supposed to prevent that (I'm assuming). I'm curious to know what the odds are that he survives this. They have to be in his favor if he's attempting it but you never know.
I'd worry about stabilizing and slowing down enough to release the main. I guess he'll have vents or burn a reserve to slow down?
You won't burn up in re-entry. Terminal velocity in the upper atmosphere is slower than at the edge of it.
I know it was a joke, but relevant as far as the ascent goes. Not to mention the flimsy nature of the helium balloon.
He could probably correct on descent, though. Especially if supersonic. Still though, if jumping that high up, better to know exactly where you are so you can get to where you want to go.
I think he is too busy being careful as to not get into an uncontrollable spin while still in the thinner upper atmosphere. Like a jet, if he does he is toast.
Joseph Kittinger Jr and the guy jumping think getting into an uncontrollable spin is the biggest hazard of the jump.
Yea. Because that is the issue that will pop up first. But he'll control that... by doing everything he would already do anyway. By using his hands, thighs, shoulders and feet, he'll be able to control how the air moves around his body, and remain stabilized. He is going to rocket down, arms at side, head out and feet together, but he'll still be able to control how air moves around him. And, he'd still be able to make up for being pushed off course based on how he launches, before he stabilizes. Meaning, the bearing he leaves his vehicle when he launches. But again, the less that can go wrong, the better.
