1. Will he teach dbs to turn and look for the ball?
2. Will he teach them to intercept occasional passes?

If the answer to either of these is yes, he'll be a drastic improvement.

 

UT is guaranteed to be 8-4 next year now with an improved defense.

 

UNC was 14th in pass defense last year, but only had 1 int all year, dead last in the NCAA.

 

Graduate of the Air Force Academy...so he should have an IQ over 55.

 

So how exactly was Butch able to hire this guy without announcing Martinez was let go?

Just made the deliberate decision to work for Butch Jones, so probably nah.

Opp Yards/Attempt: 7.1 (52nd)
Pass TDS given up: 10(t-5th)
Opp QB rating: 125.6 (54th)

 

Ridiculous. He can't deal with the negativity associated with firing someone.

 

Considering I doubt they're keeping two DB coaches onboard, the announcement of this guy coming on board makes it pretty obvious they're also announcing Martinez what let go.

 

Quite comical that a caller on Basillio today said they led the ACC in int's this year. wtf?

 

Obviously - it was just odd they didn't make a formal announcement before hiring this guy that Martinez was gone.

Seems like Butch was just trying to control the media/story yet again.

 

This appears to be an excellent hire.

Willie Martinez will not be returning after serving as defensive backs coach for the Vols the past four seasons

6 years as a DC at AFA.
DB coach at Nebraska and UNC, both units showed marked improvement under his coaching.

 

Maybe INTs returned for TD %. They were 1 for 1 on that.

 

Shoutout to Willie Mo for managing to stay employed by big time programs for 16 years while being a terrible coach. Quite the accomplishment.

 

well... good thing we didn't hire UNC's defensive line coach.
