Hey we could be distant cousins! My Cousin, used to work for the historical Society in Knoxville, he did our whole family on my moms side. When I started doing my dads, he showed me how to navigate Ancestry.

The biggest word of caution I would offer is to carefully scrutinize the connections you find online. Bottom line is that everyone wants to be related to somebody. I began getting suspicious when multiple lines traced back to a revolutionary war figure of note, to an original settler of Jamestown, etc. Or, when taken back to England - there were often ties to historical figures.

So, I began to apply a higher burden of proof and a closer eye. What I found most often happened was that there would be reasonably solid connection back to Joe Blow. And then a reasonably solid connection from Joe Blow back to the 'important' person. However, the trick was that there was no solid evidence that the two Joe Blows were actually the same guy - and this is even more prevalent for women.

I think that famous lines are well-researched so the info is there and hen people go back they look for a certain name they've traced back to and find it in those lines. The state of birth and general time line up and they go with it - but is often very loose and with inconsistencies.

Of the lines I feel confident in, I do descend from an original settler of Pennsylvania who came with William Penn. Later, Penn witnessed his will. His descendant fought in the American Revolution and his sons (and one of my nth grandfathers) were among the first settlers in Tennessee to stray west of the Clinch River into Indian territory where they settled the Scarbrough (their last name) community. Later, that land was acquired by the government to build Oak Ridge and Y-12 was sited at Scarbrough. I never knew that when I worked there.

I'm in London/Cambridge this week. I'm going to try to make it to the Quaker burial ground where my Scarbrough ancestor, who returned to England before his death, is buried.

I have confirmed connections to several revolutionary war veterans on both maternal and paternal sides. However, trying to trace back to ancestors beyond that gets really tough in the 1650-1750 range. I have a handful of other revolutionary connections, including a reasonably historical general whose uncle was a general under Washington, but I place those in the category of 'questionable' or 'weak' due to some inconsistencies and what I suspect might be miraculous jumps to the family line of a guy or woman with the same name as my ancestor.

I'm Irish, English and German with a very small amount of American Indian blended in... my great-great grandmother was a Choctaw Indian. I believe on my father's side we are English/Irish... my uncle is very into ancestry so can't remember all the details but believe our ancestors were Quakers who came to North Carolina from England.
