Anyone who experienced 1998 couldn't name any other game. I feel true sorrow for any Vol fan, whether too young or stuck watching at home, who wasn't there that night. Those who were there know what it means to have an electric atmosphere. It was like that all night, this surreal scene of an unending din of noise that didn't allow my ears to stop ringing until the following Tuesday. I sat in Row 7 on the 10 yard line on the side where the OT took place. I saw Deon Grant sky for an interception right in front of me and Collins Cooper miss the FG to win the game for the Vols (and, for a split second only the people behind the goal posts knew he missed it, so it was this pause of silence from everywhere except for one section before everything went ape shit). Other things people may not know if they weren't there; it was damn hot, sultry hot and reeked of BO when everyone ran onto the field. Student tickets were still free and the line for the tickets extended in a snaking line all up and around the student center into the plaza area the night before they were to be distributed. People stole all kinds of shit from the field. I'm not even sure CBS got both their cameras from the goalposts back. People took tons of parts of the field and there was talk that the field would be unplayable the following week against Houston, possibly causing a forfeit. It didn't happen, but the field was a complete mess the next week. Still, bar none, the greatest atmosphere I've ever seen for a sporting event.
I wasn't at the game, but I'll never forget Ward's calling of that game. "Touchdown Big Orange..... in the downpour"
One singular moment? Deon Grant's one-handed interception in 98. In a losing effort, Berry's pick 6 of Tebow.
Huge buildup to that 06 game. I remember that whole week this Florida fan calling into the Sports Animal just killing Urban Meyer... saying he sucked, how he hated the spread and so on. Little did we know... That loss was tough to take. The Strip was a nightmare that night. Fights everywhere.

Beautiful. I had heard so much shit from Gator fans about the hit on Joey Kent, so I was so happy to see us lay out one of theirs. Interesting thing about that game is that I didn't find out who won until New Year's Eve. I was just starting my time in the Peace Corps and my training was on a remote island in the Pacific with no access to the internet, TV, etc. The best I could do is if I borrowed a neighbor's radio and listened to the Voice of America (still a sketchy proposition). Anyway, someone came back from the main island with a printout of news we were missing, including a the most recent college football scores, which had UT losing the SEC Championship to LSU. It was an odd moment of joy to realize we had finally won in the Swamp with a despair that we had choked away the game against LSU. My parents sent me a recording of the Florida game and I got to watch it for the first time mid-January 2002 in the Peace Corps dormitory.
