I feel like you guys are saying the same bottom-lines I am, but still twisting around where the problem lies. Why blame an immigrant for being more willing to work for less? He isn't making anyone hire him. It's the employer's fault, and it is partially the lazy unemployed's fault. The immigrant is just the one stepping in and making things happen.

I mean, seriously. Do we or do we not have minimum wage laws? Do we or do we not have laws prohibiting undocumented workers from working? laws are being broken, beyond the act of illegal immigration. But those laws are being broken by white guys with money, so we look the other way and blame the Mexican peasant for wanting a leg-up?

Illegal immigrants wouldn't come if they weren't getting something out of all the trouble.

As I understand the HB56, that is exactly what it is setting out to do. The E-check(or whatever it is called) is set up to prevent companies from hiring illegal immigrants. I dont personally blame joe mexico and tonya tortilla for wanting to come here illegally.......I agree with you that we should not only hold them accountable and put under authority, but also the companies and businesses that profit off the backs of these illegals.

I'm a general contractor as well.

I use a crew of mexican workers sparingly (5 or 6 times a year) to do minor repair work and roofing. They are all legal and I make damn sure of it. They work for $20 an hour. They blow away the work of guys charging 25 to 35 dollars an hour. I don't use them because they're cheap, I use them because they do better work.

Sure, illegal aliens are to blame, but the employers that are using illegals are worse imo. I can't get too mad at a guy wanting to work.

I'm by no means supporting an open border. I just have a hard time feeling sorry for guys that don't do shit whining about having to work for 12 or 13 dollars an hour when they aren't even worth that.

The companies that employ illegal aliens don't catch enough hell either.

Exactly. It used to be just about working making money, and sending it home. When they found a way into the system there was no reason to send it home, bring home up here.

Their children born on this soil may get the services, but they don't. If you don't like that, we need to change our citizenship qualifiers to not include birth on US soil. We're way behind most all industrial countries on that.

If they're legal and superior, why are you only using them sparingly?

Might not be good at some of the finishing work. Might be more like "specialists." As in, roofing and siding.

I don't do a lot of residential roofs, or residential work much.

So they work hard, but they have limited skills. Interesting.

Thats not exactly what I was getting at. Many of them have found a way into the system without having a kid on US soil. Which was what I was implying. Back in the day most of them would hold enough of their check back to live on here and send the rest of it home to their family, and a lot of them would work here for 6 to 8 months and they went home for the winter. Thats changed over time.

I don't consider being able to frame and roof a house a "limited skillset".

i'm not sure i agree with the illegal quality of work as in skill set argument. a lot will cut corners and not make things to code. it's great if you have a backyard taht needs some holes digged, but not so much for quality work.

It all depends on who you hire.

There's plenty of people that cut corners, regardless of legality.

of course, but in so cal you get a lot of unlicensed guys going around trying to get work. the vast majority who are illegals. it's obviously much easier for them to do a crappy job and get away with it. it's human nature. i wasn't making a cultural argument.
