Gonna have to side with the American sports stars are unknown around the world crowd. Foreigners that I know are completely unaware of more than 3-4 American athletes. Bron, Kobe, Tiger, that's about it. They can flat rattle off the soccer players though.

Yes, I've been to Europe. Have you been to somewhere outside of North America and Europe? They weren't playing American music in Turkey or Georgia. I'd wager you could find someone in any gathering who was versed in American pop culture, but the vast majority are not unless it's like Michael Jackson or something.
