It's mentioned in some of the 80s comics. There was a Superman miniseries in the mid-80s that tracked Superboy's progression to Superman, and there was a board in one panel that listed odds for where he would relocate to. New York was listed as well as Boston and several other major cities. As I recall, the odds were best for New York. DC avoids using real cities for most stories though.
