I don't know that threatening another shutdown was a smart play there

If he does that, he may run unopposed in 2020.

So, what was the point of the shutdown then?

    He blinked.

Basically they need to open up long enough to get people paid. Then they’ll figure it out from there.

I hope the deal included a cage match with Jim Acosta

He's been promised that Congress will authorize wall funding via the new bipartisan committee, before Feb. 15th.

If they do not, he will shut the government down for the duration of his term(s) in office, without full wall funding -$300B+.

Border security funding, not wall funding specifically (at least from the wording I read) - big difference to these politics types.

He had to do something to open things up even if just long enough to get the backpay checks out. There were beginning to be problems bigger than just hiccups across the system.

    The wall is now 300B?

So, what you are saying is that Nancy didn't cave... As you told me she would.

    Is the government open?

Does he have 5B for a wall?

He had to blink because there were key systems that were beginning to be too stressed. It was the right thing to do.

I do think if they don’t hive him money for a fence or whatever they want to call it, he’ll shut her down again. From most commentary, folks think a second shutdown is unlikely. But I don’t think that’s because Trump won’t do it. I think the expectation is that the committee will play ball in their own way.

Listening to some folks from NATCA

Sounds like the damage done there won't be fixed for a while

I don't think Republicans can withstand the hit of another shutdown. They will likely recover from this one, another one... Seems unlikely

It certainly wasn't Pelosi who will publicly say she has agreed in principle to wall funding.

    Publicly.

    Yeah, it's lose lose.

I think things get ugly if there is the hint of another shutdown.

And don't get me wrong, I don't think Dems come out unscathed, just less scathed

Don't care politically. The next day that Trump / GOP count on winning the votes of Federal workers will be the first time.

    That's pretty short-sighted

Air travel hiccups are gonna piss off a lot of people with a lot of money. That's why it was the catalyst today, as Card deftly predicted

That's the thing - it isn't "Republicans". If the Republicans intended to secure the southern border, it would have been done at multiple points from the 80's until today, and after the Dems promised funding for a wall to Reagan, in return for his agreeing to amnesty for millions of illegals.

"Republicans" no more want the southern border effectively secured than the Dems do. They just have to lie for a few months every couple of years and act like they do.

It's President Trump that's fighting this fight.
