Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Are there an absurdly high number of grandparents forced to raise their children's children these days? It seems like since I started working in Maryville half the people I meet over the age of 65 are raising a little kid that evidently mom or dad can't handle. Is that a local problem or do people see that elsewhere?

Here it's due to drug addiction.

Maryville gonna Maryville*. But there may be a trend. And I agree with Kat that it's meth related.

*I defy anyone to go into the Maryville WalMart and not at least do some soul searching about the so-called missing link.

Not a local issue at all. Sadly it's a growing issue with kids.

I don't think its only meth.

Pills are a much larger problem.

I didn't think it was, just didn't notice it nearly as much when I worked in Knoxville. I was also getting a lot less patients from more rural areas then.

Probably right. The Maryville insertion got me going in that direction.

100%. Lady at work is raising 3 grandkids because of meth.

Gah. I had to go pick up some supplies from a local pharmacy. I hate to judge a book by its cover, but everyone in there was addicted to something. I'd have bet my life on it. Just annoying as shit watching them get their prescriptions filled and ring up a few Mountain Dews simultaneously.

Rural areas are quickly catching up to a lot of inner city rates on a lot of these issues.

My wife is really hating on suboxone. One of her patients told her about baking it and scraping off the blocker drug so they can get high.

Have you heard anything about people doing this?

I haven't, but don't really have any interaction with many addicts.

High consumption rates of Mtn dew are a dead giveaway that it's a meth addict vs another drug. Apparently the "glow" from the bottle is similar to an aura they recognize when they're methed up

Suboxone is a replacement drug. Nothing more or less

I've heard pills are a major problem in Knoxville. Seems like I heard that heroine is also bad?

They are either in jail or so strung out they are incapable of raising a kid.

Go into any pediatric practice. 1/3 are there with grand parents.

    Sad sad thread.

I spend time with some exceptionally wealthy folks and prescription drugs cause similar issues. The role of the "therapist" appears to be to addict people.
