At one point, if you were big time prospect you went to Cobb.

I had a guy hit a ball of me down there that went halfway up the deck at Turner field. I turned to admire it.

    Vaughn: "Name one."

    Taylor: "Yellowstone."

That's the ones I wanted to give up. The back of the wall scrapers used to piss me off.

    How about Canseco-off-the-noggin home runs?

UT has one of the worst OB percentage on the SEC. They also had a difficult time in getting players in scoring position. 66 doubles and 57 Steals.
UT reached base 592 times (423 base hits and 169 BB) over 50 games. They had a total of 229 runs. That is 12 base runners a game averaging of 4.6 runs a game.

Lets look at LSU (Regular Season best record) on base and scoring opportunities.
LSU had 135 doubles and 112 steals more than doubling that of UT.
LSU 990 base runners (691 and 299) over 58 games. That is 17 base runners a game averaging 7 runs a game but they have twice the amount of players in scoring position with doubles and steals than that of UT.

It shows there is a serious lack of player development on this squad by the coaching staff and a lack of team speed.

So, it's been harder than he expected, and he's quit.

How has that been evidenced? Did he tell the team? Did he just stop coaching? What?

Well in my one time pitching against a Cobb team I didn't give up the long ball. They just mercilessly sprayed doubles all over the place.

I can see the coach now:

"OK boys, with this guy we will work on hitting to a location. I want all shots inside the park and in the gaps."

Gathering boys and coordinating "shots in the gap" are right up NYY's alley.

    And down his chute.

I'm beyond gap. I'm more cavernous at this point.

He's in a predicament. He could potentially turn this around if the effort and the hiring of assistants were made correctly.

At the same time, he's going to have to take a significant drop in his next gig with how his resume stacks right now.

Lack of ability or incompetence is understandable. Sometimes you get in over your head, trying to be the best that you can be. Sometimes you get ahead of yourself.

There is no excuse for lack of effort, or going through the motions.
