Was it bad timing or insensitivity? Moments after Bob Costas was talking about Gabby Douglas's record-breaking gold medal and how she was the first African American to win the women's all-around title, a commercial came on featuring a monkey doing gymnastics.

They've been pushing that show pretty hard during the olympics. You really think they were holding on to that spot to air it right after that production piece?

 

I am confused why all the announcers are saying that she is the first African-American to win...

They are either not giving her enough credit by limiting her accomplishment to just Americans or they think Blacks around the world are called African-Americans.

I heard about this. I heard about the incident when she went on a talk show a couple of years ago. You guys are so funny about how much attention things get.

 

Costas prefaced that comment by saying it was an imaginary barrier, then gave her credit for overcoming said imaginary barrier. I thought the whole thing was odd.

 

Actually I did not think it a big deal because, judging by CNN’s ratings, nobody saw it.

I've always been a big fan of Costas, but he does occasionally try too hard to be profound.
