I do not understand the nuances of soccer substitutions, but why would he not start? Age creeping up on him?

 

I'd say so, also I've no idea what his season was like, i.e. coming off injury, level of fitness, etc. 20 minutes to ball hard is probably a better use for him. Also, Bony is no slouch.

 

Ya, him going 110% for 20 may be better than 80% for 90. Plus then he's going against tired legs while still fresh, magnifying his effectiveness.

 

I always respected the Netherland approach to soccer, but after that final last WC, I lost all respect for them.

I didn't see this game, but did they get back to Total Football or was it more goonery?

 

They turned Spain around, bent them over, and made them like it. They long balled over the midfield, and Spain's CBs and Casillas were terrible.

 

I wouldn't call it goonery. They looked quicker and more organized.
