I think ultimately the show has it to where in the federation you don't need money, it is obsolete. but when dealing with other civs or outside the federation, you do need something and that's okay. ds9 covers it.
people will still be self motivated to excel beyond their peers. Roddenberry had this bs idea while star fleet lived far better than normal humans and the captain far better than the crew. The crew also wanted to be promoted and get ships of their own. Kirk had what would be a $5 mil condo in San Francisco. Also had a bomb ass vacation home. Those are material possessions.
And less face it if the population had a food replicator and halo deck 90 percent of people would never leave their house. The struggle is a needed part of the human experience
how do you know Kirk's shit isn't in storage most of the time and that condo is an air bnb or fed posting? a big part of star trek is about self improvement and being the best, that doesn't mean tearing down or dominating others. that's the point, it doesn't have to be like that.
unless people's motivations are different then... Barclay is a holo addict. he still has ambitions, and fights against those mental issues
he talks about owning the cabin and apparently lived in condo when he was an admiral. Don’t tell me the redshirts are living like that.
I don’t think people’s motivations change that much once basic survival is being met. Let’s remember Star Trek isn’t THAT far into the future and people’s motivations haven’t changed much for 100 years. Barclay is in Star Trek which means he’s already a self motivated individual and is in the ruling class. Your average dude on earth isn’t going to give a [uck fay].
None of these things are negatives, or work against the idea of working toward the greater good. Being the best at your job that benefits society is working toward the greater good.
Having everything you need without struggle to get it kills motivation. What does the average trust fund kid do?
No it doesn't. It just changes the motivation. You may be the world's greatest musical composer, except for the need to feed your family and accomplish your goals. But we'll never know. That wouldn't be true if those things were already accomplished. The average trust fund kid doesn't live in a world where EVERYONE is a trust fund kid, so your question is stupid.
droski has a hard time understanding hoo-mahns. He prefers to live by his Rules of Acquisition. Rule of Acquisition #284: deep down, everyone is a Ferengi.
so the trust fund kid is unmotivated because he has things other people don’t? That doesn’t make sense
Yes it does. Competition is all about comparing talents. If you are a talented runner, you aren't challenged by one without talent. And if few had talent, you wouldn't be challenged. If everyone had talent, you'd be challenged. In addition, you aren't talking about 10th generation trust fund kid. But that is what we're talking about, because generations will have gone by where oh, wow, dad is good at golf. I'm going to be better than dad at golf.
