And I'm saying that's immoral and short-sighted. We are social beings who inevitably will have to depend on others and manage finite resources and space.

Guaranteed minimum income is one of two possible inevitable outcomes to the continued automatizing of labor. We're not far away from virtual lawyers, for ****'s sake.

Sure, loved ones first, but I have been taught to love my neighbor as myself.

Can't get the link to work but I bet it's an Isbell song.

Its not a question of helping someone who needs it. Helping my neighbor (which I was taught as well) should have nothing to do with my taxes and someone neither of us has met deciding how that all works out.

How does a socialist system work?

I understand what you're saying. But I'm just saying that I see what IP is getting at. That's it.

Yeah, technically a Drive By Truckers song but he wrote it when he was with them

Yeah, the nasty breakup kind of ended any future of them playing each other's songs is why I call it an Isbell song. I think they helped Isbell but they were a lot better with him than without him.

There has been no pure socialist system, and there are many ways one could make it work. One of them is through meeting all basic minimum needs, and any luxuries requiring labor. Essentially, what people on the right falsely claim we already have though we don't.

Imagine how many people would go into business for themselves if they weren't terrified of being homeless and hungry if they failed. It would be a pursuit and goal for everyone.

I see what he's getting at as well.

I got tied up on my trip up there early this week. Between a deadline and weather it just didn't work.
Coming back Sun/Mon again maybe we can break bread.

We're not a nation the size of a neighborhood. All because someone is out of sight shouldn't preclude them from help. In terms of deciding how that works out, that's something for debate and the democratic process. The same way everything else is. I don't love how people I haven't met are ordered to go bomb other people I haven't met by someone I've never met. That's the real world. It's big.

Example: Flint, Michigan is in a bad way. The reasons why are one thing, but the real harm being done is another. To bail out that situation would be socialism, but it would also be humanitarian.

I think it would be more than offset by those who are more than comfortable sitting in a 400 squarefoot apartment eating cheap food and watching cable all day long. Nature is inherently lazy, and humans are part of nature. As long as taxes and money were required to make a system work, I don't think it can work.

Now, you have a situation like in science fiction where everyone has a replicator and a fusion generator in their house, it might work.

I want it, but I just don't think a pure socialist country can work at this point in human history.

Jesus taught that we should love God just as he loves us, and we should love our neighbor just as we love ourselves. To me this does not mean I am responsible for his well being, but should help him in times of trouble. Also Jesus said do as you would have done to you. If everyone followed this "Golden Rule", none of this dialogue would even be a thought, let alone such a divisive dissertation. Our inner self tells us what is right and what is wrong. Having the strength and resolve to follow what you feel is where man falters. Worrying about what people think or that you might show weakness becomes more powerful than many can overcome. I have not always practiced this, but I try to a whole hell of a lot more than I did before.

Never mentioned pure. The ideas that you pitched required the government hand, yes?

As to starting a business. Yes it is terrifying to an extent. And it would have a comfort advantage somewhat, but desperation is not a bad thing altogether either. If I make a poor path decision or business model thats not your fault.

I fully acknowledge that this sort of behavior exists and would be a problem. I do think we can find ways to motivate them short of cutting off the food. (also, keep in mind they couldn't have cable without working).

Even in Star Trek, people have to have jobs for luxuries. There is no currency or money, but there are social privileges.

You could be right, but I'd like to be moving in that direction and conditioning us for it. Fetishizing wealth accumulation and demonizing the less fortunate isn't the way to do it. We ought to be praising hard work more. Yet all we do as a society is tear down the most commonly available jobs.

I think you got way to simple with a term. Can you help someone in another state without the money filtering through taxes/government?
