ATF is trying to ban 5.56mm ball ammunition as "armor-piercing".

With this and the EPA coming down hard on lead, it's really not that too crazy to see them coming hard after ammo instead of the guns.

It is specifically the M855, 62 grain green tip.

Other FMJ 556 are safe, for now.

Still seems like a huge overreach of the classification of armor-piercing

It is. But the response is due to "AR pistols."

Most high caliber rifles will penetrate the common ballistic vests worn by law enforcement.

Not so much with pistols, so the presence of such modified rifles to be made highly concealable and rapid functioning has caused a shift in the previous exemption policy.

I'd be shocked if it didn't get banned.

The irony is that the M855 is being phased out due to decreased stopping power, in favor of other rounds. So surplus ammo will follow, thus producing more highly lethal ammo for the average consumer. Ammo that likely won't be banned, at first.

Savage Orange I need ammunition, not a ride. -V Zelensky.

Laughable, the prices folks are asking for 500 round cans of m855... I just wish the Great Powder Scare of 2013-15 would finally subside... I'm getting low on Varget and Titegroup...

Follow the money. The "Oh noes, Obama comin' for yer gunz" stuff has been really good for the industry, and is a lot more rhetoric than it is substance.
