Sounds like wishful thinking to me.

Sounds like they've already guaged his interest and he told them to **** off so they generated a convenient excuse.

he'd be pretty dumb to stay at MSU. highly unlikely they stay this good for long with the talent on the team and the guys likely to leave this year.

Exactly. No way Kiffin was going to USC except this scenario. Butch wouldn't be a top 4 choice, but he could easily be a top 10 available choice.

yeah. Starkville is not the place to attract continuous talent. Get out while you can.

Guess we could hire him to replace Butch.

exactly. kiffin mostly got hired at usc because he was part of the "trojan family" though. if butch was a former coach or alumnus at Michigan, he could easily be plan b.

eh. He can win 9 or more games at MSU from now into eternity. There is a lot of talent in that state that doesn't have the brains to get much attention out of state.

his recruiting over the past couple of years doesn't suggest he can win 9 or more games there. ole miss is bringing in the top end talent at this point.

Disagreed. LSU/Auburn/Alabama own that division. Ole Miss is just on the outside looking in.

MSU is this year's Mizzou. Mullen will jump ship ASAFP.

Mississippi kids can get overlooked pretty easily and be better than their ratings.

Freeze got Treadwell out of Chicago and Tunsil out of Florida

Instead, Butch coached under Rich Rodriguez, a guy most Michiganders hate

As long as he keeps beating Ole Miss and keeps winning bowl games--hell, just gets them there, in most years--he'll be able to demand anything and everything he wants from the admin at State. He's already considered (arguably?) the best HC they've ever had and Prescott is probably held in higher esteem in Starkville than Tebow was in Gainesville--they, at least, had some highly successful QB's before his arrival, State had.....Sleepy Robinson? Wayne Madkin?

There's something to be said for being happy where you're at while also being successful.

Let's be clear on one thing though, I'm not saying he "should" stay, simply that he's already turned down overtures from other high profile jobs which stands to reason that he's, at the very least, either being highly selective or happy to stay in Starkville.

    There's that too.

Oxford is nicer than Starkville, but if you go to both and are really honest with yourself, there's not that much difference.

Yeah, but once a fan base gets a taste of the top 10, they don't want to go back to "Hey, we won 8 and went to the Gator bowl! Give him a raise!"

Well, unless you are Tennessee fans.

Trust me, I come from a family of Mississippi State fans and alums, as long as he's winning, they're content. Yes, expectations have undoubtedly risen but State's fanbase understands that this is very likely a once-in-a-lifetime run. They're enjoying the ride as long as it lasts...but they expect to be in the playoff.

that is how they feel now, but even Stanford fans have started to think that is where they belong.

I work with some Miss St alums and they're good people. They've been enjoying the ride this year but like you said, they understand the situation for what it is.
