Battleship "X"- the USS South Dakota

Great read over at Smithsonian.com, following the exploits of the ship partly through the eyes of a 12 year old who had snuck his way into the US Navy in 1942.

I know it's heresy, but for me Warspite ranks up there with Iowas.

What a great history the Warspite had.

 

Synopsis?

 

I used to check out books on battleships/dreadnoughts from the library and she was always one I was drawn to.

Longevity and survivability, your not gonna find one better.

Then to meet such an anticlimactic ending.....

I knew about the ending, but didn't realize the ship did much after WW1.

 

Hopefully Uni will drop by so I can make fun of his Rodney and Nelson posters he has hanging in his garage.

Yep, HMS Warspite

 

She's not the most aesthetically pleasing battleship.

The Italian Battleship Roma may take that crown.

I'm also partial to the clipper bow of our super dreadnoughts which I'll use the Tennessee as the example.

 

Nothing more imposing than a battleship. Antiquated even when the Iowas were being built, they still have sense of gravitas.

 

My family loves visiting Nauticus and the Wisconsin.

Heck, we even went on our honeymoon.

 

The airplane and the torpedo say hello.
