To continue the Stanley Kubrick theme, I am going to throw in Dr. Strangelove. Yes, it was satire, but damn is it good.
People always talk about how some people don’t want to talk about what they’ve seen while at war, the ending of Saving Private Ryan and what he sees is what I think of. Can’t imagine that. I’m a talker and I tell everything but that would probably go to the grave with me.
imo the men and women who end up doing those types of things are the types of people who don't talk about it.
I know. Me, too. I actually show the Pearl Harbor attack scene in my US History classes, with reluctance, as the kids enjoy it and it's just enough silliness for me to endure. I, literally, cover my ears, though, when Ben Affleck spits out "Danny, just get me in a [dadgum] plane!".
I was friends with a guy at Tech that earned a silver star medal in Somalia. He said the movie did a good job on the action and that it was a total cluster[uck fay].
Went to Tech with a guy whose dad was awarded a silver star stemming from the battle of Mogadishu after the blackhawks went down (I don’t think he had a part in the movie but his name is mentioned - if I remember correctly it was over the radio). I imagine they know each other well, haha (pretty sure not the same person). Best I could tell, this guy was quite the badass and a reasonably significant figure in night stalker aviation. He piloted a little bird down into an alley and held the stick with his knees while clearing out the enemy through the window with his personal weapon (MP-5). His co-pilot jumped out to run rescue on one of the downed blackhawks. Makes me wonder if BPV knew him.....
I am imagining a teacher willingly showing a clip from a movie but then "literally covering his ears" during a scene because of how awful it is. Sounds like a great class.
