The athletic department spent a total of $39,793 on rings and pendants to celebrate both the victory over Virginia Tech in the Battle at Bristol and the Music City Bowl victory over Nebraska, according to records obtained by the Knoxville News Sentinel. Dave Hart should be fired immediately for signing the checks for this
Probably had so much money left in the ring budget from the years of no success. They had to spend it on something.
Pfft. Who would have wanted just one SEC title ring when you could get TWO for Bristol AND a win over Nebraska?
Shit, Kentucky got rings for their bowl game, and they got wrecked. At least we aren't getting bowl loss rings.
2 rings for a championshipless Music City Bowl season is pretty damn weak. That's taking it to a new low for a top 10 all time wins program.
They're striving for number 1 on the revenue list. Could you imagine the costs associated with real championship hardware? Why try for that when this is so much cheaper and easier, and the goals of the admin are in sight?
I'd say the majority of them will pitch them in a drawer and they'll never see the light of day, but I think it should be up to them to decide what they do with the rings. Also, I'm almost positive that it was announced well before the Battle of Bristol that the winning team would get rings, so I don't think that is one of Butch's many terrible ideas. In the mile long list of legitimate gripes about Butch, this issue is pretty close to the bottom.
If $40k on rings for meaningless ball games, imagine how much they must've spent on the life championship rings...most important victory of all.
I remember meeting a former player in a Vegas casino once. He saw my UT hat and wanted to show me his SEC championship ring that he still wore. It was bad ass. This, not so much.
