Ok. Your initial posts came across as if it would be easy and automatic, and neither of those things are.

Well, he's colored in the cow correctly already, he knows picking the color for the barn and the sky in the background will be a tough test.

I couldn't do it. It's pretty easy to avoid mistakes that could send me to jail in my profession. With so many tax laws and nuances, that can"t be said of the accounting profession.

Not everyone can be a Skylar White who had a drug kingpin purposefully saying things law enforcement could hear giving them the impression that she feared for her life if she didn't do Walt's dirty work.

The boss is usually out to blame the accountant in order to save his/her own skin.

Without disparaging all you teachers on the board because I love you guys ... I have tried to tell him that he isn't going to make any money teaching. We are in a small town and we know 95% of the teachers in our elementary and high school and, honestly, they're doing ok financially man. It's hard to tell him 'you're gonna starve' when his math teacher lives right next door to us in the same neighborhood.

Thanks for the advice because the realm of 'college professor' is foreign to me.

Teaching is the most rewarding job I've ever had. I love being in class with my students. They are awesome. There's no greater feeling than seeing that "aha!" moment in your students' eyes or seeing them beam with pride when they accomplish something they never thought they could. The connections & relationships you develop last forever. I have been doing this for going on 25 years. I now have former students who are very close friends who have helped me out in many ways over the years.

The negative sides in teaching are numerous. No, I'm not going to starve, but the pay is well below the average salary for others with similar education. I work in a system that is consistently at the lowest end of the pay scale. I could have driven 15 more minutes to a city system & immediately get a $10k-$15k raise. I turned down multiple opportunities to do that because I wanted to stay "home" to help kids in my community. But, there's more to it than just pay.

Dealing with the bureaucracy in school systems is maddening. You deal with that everywhere to a degree, but education has its own special bureaucratic hell. I'm even more jaded after some very recent events. I won't go into that, but I'll just say that my experience has been that the powers that be don't give one rat's ass that you do a good job or how long you've done that good job.. They'll still screw you in a heartbeat if it suits their underhanded plans. There are bad apples everywhere, but teachers get it from all sides: parents, bosses, shady colleagues, the govt, and the general public.

Don't take the above as whining. I've know all that for a long time, but I continue to do the job for my students. They deserve the best I can give them each day. Anyone thinking of pursuing this career, which has its rewards as well as crosses to bear, needs to go in with their eyes wide open.

So ... they pay is not really what I'm concerned about the most when it comes to him wanting to pursue teaching as a career. The politics you discuss are very real where we are as well. Knowing everyone in town can be good but there is also a lot of bad that comes from that. There are a large number of kids that graduate here and go on to get teaching degrees so it is pretty cutthroat around here to get a job. Not saying he couldn't move on somewhere else to get a job but this school system is pretty damn shady when it comes to politics.

Which one is the one that oversaw $1.7b in fraud?

    Okay, that's pretty hilarious.

On a side-note, I had a rabid socialist friend of mine post a mommy-blog article reporting why making children share is not fair to them. Of course, she also works for Comcast so I think her mentality lives in a different world than her reality.

Seems more like a parenting thing than a political ideology thing.

She's not a parent and she hates kids. She likes the premise because she "has long felt that sharing is a really awful concept, the way it's taught to most children. I was a kid once, and I hated sharing things I was given or wanted to use" Dead serious, that is a direct quote.

    But she is a "Socialist"?

    Is she sane?

My wife often takes the stance that if my boy is currently playing with a toy, and someone wanders over that he shouldn’t immediately just give it up in the name of sharing.

But we also teach him not to hoard toys, and if there is a desire to play together, then he should share.

I imagine that is similar to the point she is trying to convey, not that sharing should never be done, but that things shouldn’t be automatically handed over in the name of sharing.
