I prefer Jimmy Fallon's show, whichever it is. None of them are sidesplittingly funny or even that much better than the other, and I enjoy The Roots.
S&L has always been cyclical. They’ll start with a a new cast, be borderline unfunny for a few years, then they hit their stride for a couple of years, then everybody leaves to do other stuff, rinse and repeat.
The last episode I saw they had a hard time being funny with Dave Chappelle as the host. They're in a pretty deep lull right now.
grew up on Johnny Carson watching my dad laugh at Foster Brooks, and my dad didn't laugh often. Leno sucked. Letterman was iffy for me and the band guy bugged the shit out of me. Conan is pretty creative. I only see the rest via a link if someone sends it, or if its on when I get up to pee the first or 2nd time after going to bed
Ripping and being funny aren't the same. Dana Carvey was outright hysterical as 41. Hartman was the same with Clinton (Real Stories of AHP might be my favorite SNL skit ever), and Hammonds wasn't bad either. Also did a good Cheney. Ferrell was great as 43. It was funny, it was creative. It's not funny now, it's just rage because they don't like Trump.
While I agree with you, there’s also not a single part of me that can blame them. I get frustrated these days with the current climate on CNN in the evenings, for example, because it is just meant to be Trump bashing entertainment. I don’t find it entertaining. So I’m certainly not going to be entertained by it when a comedian does it. I think they struggle because he’s so non-presidential that trying your typical approach isn’t funny anymore. Sad maybe.
Incessant OJ jokes is what got Norm McDonald fired. At the time, the head of NBC was personal friends with OJ, and repeatedly told Norm to knock it off. And, like any good comedian, this only caused McDonald to ramp it up even more ferociously and frequently - and that’s why he was canned. The head of NBC / OJ’s friend flew McDonald all the way out to LA, just to have the pleasure of firing him to his face. “Totally worth it.”, Norm later remarked, when speaking about the incident, and all that lead to it,
