If prohibition worked, we wouldn't be talking about a substance abuse epidemic.

I don’t think cocaine and heroine shops every block or so is a good idea

And I don't think decriminalizing it would either a) be promoting that or b) allow it to happen. But the war on drugs is an absolute failure and has lead to some awful atrocities in our society that have nothing to do with drugs.

Why would that happen? A substance not being illegal doesn't mean anyone can sell viagra or pain killers.

Reminds me of commercial for a new sleeping pill last night as they mentioned side effects of sleepy during the day and driving a car or walking somewhere and having no recollection of it. No thanks.

those are governed by FDA and big pharma. Weed isn’t. I assume the same would happen with shops at some point.

I would not be in favor of that. They are more like morphine than liquor or pot.

Hell, heroine metabolizes into morphine i think

Available with a prescription doesn't really stop the war on drugs. Imo

Death rate for both would quadruple. Imo

I don’t think that’d happen because it’s already so prevalent today already.

If anything I would bet that it lowers those dying from being able to access stable clean versions of the drugs and by lowering the violence used in trafficking and selling it.

Something can be legalized and unavailable legally. There's a disconnect in this conversation. It would no longer be schedule 1

I used to be more in favor of decriminalizing most recreational drugs, but after visiting Portland last summer, I have some reservations. I am still for decriminalizing a lot of drugs, but there has to be some element of control involved. I'm not saying that if we did away with drug laws, that kind of living conditions and abuse would spread like wildfire. Part of the problem there is they are an oasis for abusers, but allowing a wide-ranging free-for-all is not in our best interest as a society at this point.

It's legal to sell narcotics today in the US. Just heavily regulated and controlled. Just because you legalize something doesn't mean it's next to the dvd bin in Walmart.

Disagree. This would open it up to more people that might not try it if it was illegal. This would likely cause more overdoses. Also how do you make heroin a clean drug?

how would illegalizing fentanyl reduce the number of overdoses? It should, if what you are saying is true. But I don't see how it would since the sources of it are illegal.
