bullshit. I've seen both movies. there are almost no similarities unless you want to include the breaking out of jail part (spoiler alert!).

Old Guy - freaks out and dies (cf Brooks Hatlin)

New Guy - finds corrosion in stone walls and begins to dig his way out.
Warden - harsh, heartless jerk takes away painting privileges
New Guy - confronts harsh Warden
Excessive and brutally long periods in "the hole" or isolation
New Guy - walks in yard and secretly dumps dirt from wall from his pants

deadwood was garbage. I'd rather watch tom cruise mission impossible than bourne. unforgiving is garbage. breaking bad is fine, but way way way overrated.

 

escape from Alcatraz is a movie about someone attempting to escape and how he did it. it's the basis of the movie. the escape is shawshank is almost a minor plot point. that's like saying goodfellas and the godfather were the same movie because they both had italian gangsters.
