I'm looking to read a few great books over Xmas break. What are some of the great works that you consider to be "must reads?" Any time period and genre is welcome.

Would definitely second Great Gatsby. If you are looking for more of a pure entertainment type thing, the most recent reads I'd recommend are The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larson or Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton.
If you feel like being a pop culture whore, I am enjoying the Game of Thrones series now. If you are Vonnegut-deficient, Slapstick and Cat's Cradle are my two favorite.
I think I'm looking more for classics. Cannon type literature. Stuff that everyone should read at least once in their life. I had the Great Gatsby on my list before starting this thread, along with Middlemarch, Paradise Lost, and Ulysses. I'm not really sure how I plan to whittle it down after adding some of the suggestions from here. EDIT: my list just consists of what some other people told me are good pieces of literature. Feel free to comment.
If you only want stuffy true-blue classics, I recommend Robinson Crusoe, The Portrait of Dorian Grey, and A Farewell to Arms.
