I mean I guess theyll recoup some of that but there’s no way in hell I’d want my club to pour that much into a 33 year old. I think he’s still got more to give but good grief

He’s definitely got some drama queen in him. I wonder if it wasn’t just a power play to get what he wants

He has done this with the Argentinian team more than once.

After reading through the article, it sounds to me like he would leave if not for the $700m release clause he can’t get out of.

I’m surprised the team is essentially holding him hostage. If I understand correctly, he can leave with no strings attached at the end of next season, and the team is obviously starting a rebuild. Why delay that process by a year to keep an aging player who doesn’t want to be there?

Yes, and losing out on getting a bunch of cash, which they need? I mean, say you don't get $700 mil. Work out a lower number some oil sheik is willing to pay, like at Man City. $250 million or whatever. Now, Messi can scoot for nothing next year.

Anybody else been watching “Tottenham: All or (spoiler alert) Nothing”?

I don’t think it’s as good as the Sunderland and Leeds documentaries.

The world needs a documentary on the Milan banter era
EDIT looks like the thread is gone but there was a lot of hilarity

It’s the age old question when the aging superstar player is running down his contract. First, Barca was never getting 700 million for him, especially at his age. Second, footballers continuing to produce at his age are the exception and not the rule. And when the decline comes, is often quick and drastic.

So you have to determine what his value to you is and then you decide if he’s worth more than that with what he brings off the field (sponsorships, commercial deals, merch sales, etc.) and on the field.

I guess they think they can milk him for one more year of money and production. I’d personally sell him on, but it’s not always easy when somebody like him had given you his whole career.

Welp Shamrock Rovers were no match for mighty Milan. Now on to a more properly-named Europa League opponent, Bodø-Glimpt

Good news, Schalke! You played like Barcelona against Bayern...

Didn’t realize Weston McKinnie was so important to Schalke

He was like a swiss army knife for them, but he wasn't impacting that game for them. Schalke are scared of Bayern. Them, Wolfsburg, and Hamburg all absolutely shit their pants every time we play them.

So, we have a starter for Chelsea, Dortmund, Juventus and Leipzig on the USMNT now. This really, really should be a good national team in 2026 for the home fans.
