I feel like this deserves its own thread. I watched an E:60 just a few days ago on this very topic -- not the arrest but the massive corruption in FIFA -- and was just astounded. http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/05/2...s-in-us.html?smid==tw-nytsports&_r=1&referrer
Legal folks - How does the US play into this in that we can prosecute them? I'm just ignorant of that aspect of US/international law. And when does Blatter go down?
From what I understand from the news is that it involved us banks. That was the FBI's in for the request for extradition.
Russia, for better or worse, at least makes some logical sense. Not saying it's a prime choice, it just makes some logical sense. Qatar makes zero sense. That's the reason, IMO.
I think it will eventually shine a big light on these events. Too late to change it for Russia, probably. But Qatar needs to be axed.
Logistically, yes, Russia does. However, I guarantee they were as corrupt as Qatar in getting their Cup and, when FIFA had this huge anti-racism push in their sport, they choose the most racist country in the world, with a metastasizing homophobia problem, as the next site for the Cup. I almost expect the next hosts to be Pakistan, Uganda and whatever country ISIS controls in 2034 to be the next sites (As long as they can pony up the cash).
Listening to siriusxmfc channel this morning, a lot of the European pundits are saying it took the USA to do this. FIFA has so much money they can actually intimidate governments (apparently they held Poland hostage this way). The USA doesn't need FIFA'S money. Of course, I think Germany and other western European countries could have done this as well, I just don't know why it took the USA to finally get this going. It is funny hearing English and other country's pundits saying that fifa broke the cardinal rule: don't **** with the USA. Paraphrased of course.
