They have to be a joke. Like, all of them are in on the same joke, and there are only a handful of true believers. I believe this firmly.

It became 1000 times better when I learned that last week.

 

People are just bored, I am convinced of it, and their brains are latching on to anything that stimulates them.

That is the only explanation that I can come up with.
