Ok but so is 85% of the coaching world...and very likely a greater percentage of college football players that eat that stuff up, too.

Just because Butch calls them an "introspective bunch of guys" doesn't mean they're going to be elucidating on quantum mechanics or become Rhodes scholars anytime soon. We're talking about 18-22 year old football players that have been conditioned for years, like pavlov's dog, to respond to positive reinforcement and cliches, just like the one's Butch uses incessantly.

I personally like his corney cliches. He seems genuine with them, and coming off of #ddiapos, it is a breath of life in a dead program. In 15 years, we will be tired of him, the cliches and what he brings, but that is true of any coach.

 

They make me cringe. I've hated them since day 1.

 

If he's still here in 15 years, based off of his accomplishments rather than continuity, I won't care what he brings other than us back to relevance.

I can't answer for Jay, but for me it's because he was a .550 coach that's 1-2 in bowl games,claimed two split big East championships as great things and wasn't a proven recruiter.

 

But what does that have to do with liking or not liking corney sayings?
