Was reading a article today about the needs of CFPs over the next decade and how CPAs have started doing it a lot more. Thought you had said you were one, but couldn't remember.

 

yeah there aren’t a lot of guys my age in the business. Dot com bubble and 08 stopped a lot of people from entering the business in the entry level. My partner is a cpa and it’s definitely hard to do both. This business is a lot easier than accounting though. He stopped doing accounting 5 years ago to focus on this and he’s never been happier.

 

How would you all determine basis on an inherited property that you sold fairly quickly

basis moves up to date of death of the person you inherited from. An appraiser can help you get a value

 

btw if your firm has a decent sized tax accounting business you are basically throwing money away money not having a financial service arm. To get around the sec you basically need to have one partner registered. You can bring in someone else to run the business. My partner just basically billed hours he worked on the financial services side to compensate his partners.

It's going to be the FMV at time of death. Technically you are supposed to do an appraisal, but I've always used property tax assessment of the price you sold it for if it was sold quickly after death and never gotten pushback
