He may not have been a great strategist, but he was a mean mofo. Throw the three of them in a ring and see who comes out, my money is on the Mongol.

Concerning Hannibal's elephants, let me elaborate:

Historians were a perplexed as to why in many ancient accounts of battles, African elephants were described as smaller than Asian elephants. Turns out the African elephant they were using was not the same species we know as the African elephant. This one likely evolved on islands along the Med in limited environments, where dwarfism was a beneficial trait. It is totally extinct now, likely because of habitat loss from humans and the eventual military obsolescence of the creature as a mount.

I have always said, without a nuclear intervention, Russia wins going away.

Even if all of the Allies (sans USSR of course) fell in line? Would the USA's production power not simply do to Russia what it did to Germany? I think it would have been a foolish endeavor, however, and especially with Japan still to fight at the time.

    It wouldn't be close.

If so, I wonder why Stalin didn't go ahead and push to the Atlantic? Seems like something he would have done.

Of course, we would have had the bomb in a few months and would have nuked em back to Czarist Russia, but that is not what you are arguing (non-nuke environment).

He knew that we had an operational atomic bomb before we dropped them on Japan.

Why in the world would he push to the Atlantic and risk his advantage on the ground?

He had no reason to push west and give the advantage to the Allied Air Forces.

I thought Stalin was not in on that particular secret (nuke)?

Wouldn't our ability to invade the Soviets from the Pacific and the resulting 2 front war make a big difference?

Not sure the Pacific theater would be a big help. Siberia is big. Really big. And cold. Would be a hard row to hoe to just get to the Urals (logistically, not warfare wise as there is nothing between the two).

NOTE: Much like economics, my military strategy knowledge is limited.

He was aware of the effort to build a nuke. He had spies in my hometown that got caught outside Oak Ridge. He didn't know we had succeeded.

As a matter of fact, Truman didn't know until after FDR died.

Depends on what you read. Nothing official was ever recorded of the conversation between Truman and Stalin.

I personally believe, Stalin knew after trinity.
