Are they useful for anything anymore or are they more of a collectable? I am like KMF I had to Google hobnail boot.

True story. When Munson was interviewed about the call years after the fact he admitted that he didn't even know what a hobnail boot was, or why he even said it. He says it was a really cruel, awful thing to say, and he regretted that it became part of his legacy. Thought that was interesting.

Ward still way better. And I think Jack Cristil did better radio than Munson imo.

UT would probably remove me from the booth one quarter into my first game. Screw impartiality when doing the home calls.

This. Leave "fair and impartial" to everyone not on TN's payroll.

Also, I would blister through several bleep buttons each game.

Everybody knows the home guy has got to be a full blown homer.

It was pretty crude but I guess he got his point across. Definitely interesting that he regretted it.

That's why Ward was so good. He wasn't a homer. It's clear he was on our side, but he called the game fairly and critcally. Bill Anderson was the homer, which I think is ok for the color guy most of the time.

Yep. Ward made it easy for opposing team listeners to tune in to him. Not to mention he had a unique gift at being able to paint a picture in the minds of those who listened.

Sometimes, I wish I could watch a game being called that way.

Hobnail boots were also commonly worn by WWI Doughboys.

Those are awesome. They look like they could do some damage.

So did they have a similar effect to cleats?

I looked them up, too, thanks to this thread, and wondered the same. All I really saw was that it was a way to greatly extend the life of a boot, but you'd have to think it could work like a cleat, if the hobnails were done right.

Just another reason I am glad I live in the 21st century. THose things look like they could be uncomfortable.

I kind of wondered at times if an 8thmaxim panel could livestream themselves calling the game and if anyone would care to listen. I think it would be pretty funny. Maybe have one guy monitoring the live chat to interject some of the more humorous comments made there.

It would be a pretty big commitment and I could guy's getting drunk and tired and quitting at halftime, but I bet it would be entertaining.

Especially if some of our nicknames for players were used...

"Holy shit, TennyD! Vagitron actually caught a ball!"

"I know, NYY, and you said he couldn't catch an STD from you if he tried!"
