So it was passed as a "Mandate" rather than a "Tax" because that is the only way he could get it through Congress; yet the Supremes ruled on it under the Taxing authority of the Constitution.

There wouldn't be a scene played out on the House / Senate floor to rival that spectacle since the Winter of 1861.

It would make, "Mr. Smith's" filibuster succinct in comparison.

i suppose we could force them to pay their back taxes to get the insurance, but of course if you mandate that everyone should be able to have health insurance i'm not sure how you enforce it. as i said earlier this is the worst case scenerio. i'm 100% against this bill, but if it gets upheld the #1 thing that needs to happen is STEEP fines, maybe even jail, for not buying insurance.

If I don't buy land, I don't pay property taxes.

If I don't buy gas, I don't pay fossil fuel taxes.

If I don't become an independent contractor, I don't pay employment taxes.

    The list is endless.

Awesome logic. Further proof that the SCOTUS is supreme because it's final and not final because it is supreme.

But as currently stands, is my summary not how this reads?

You're making my point. All of those are taxes I can choose to avoid.

I'm about as conservative as anyone I know - and I'm proud of him for having followed his conscience in voting to uphold it, though oppositional to my own.

yes it is. this is horrible. the moral hazard is off the charts. the only people buying insurance now will be middle to upper class individuals with families and sick people. the former people are completely screwed.

If that happens, I hope the Russians and the Chinese invade and enslave the whole worthless lot of us.

I mis-read it, and respectfully withdraw.

Should we now refer to one another as comrades?

    Might as well.

I've wondered if this wasn't the point all along since there was no way straight up UHC would pass, just create an environment that would inevitably lead to it.

Great. Around 2016, after the first test case of not paying the tax works its way through the court, we'll actually know what this actually means.

How is the law upheld as a tax, when the original law wasn't?

    Zing!

    That's a good one.

Surprised it survived. Btw, Card, I'm not a huge fan of the law either. As I said, I favor universal coverage.

Look for the House to kill this via defunding.

I'm wondering how this will play out in the corporate world. For example, I have insurance but it's part of a plan through my company. Will it still be offered or will will they cut it to save money since technically they don't have to supply it?

Funny how Obama was 1 of the Senators who voted against Roberts nomination.

Wasn't the HC bill the Senate version passed in the House via Reconciliation? I thought all taxes had to originate in the House?
