We were in the pool in our Tennessee house, he walks up to the deck and we all freaked out. Never seen anything like it. Some kind of wasp maybe?

 

Yes, it is a wasp but it is called a "velvet ant" or "cow killer ant". Their sting is very painful (though not normally fatal, cows are drama queens).

Used to see them in pastures up in Union County from time to time.
