Is it not? Would my boot on her head not induce more panic? I have no idea how a chicken thinks or feels. So I let nature take its course.

Letting nature take its course seems like a good Buddhist answer.

But in a "true" natural environment, that was food. And so you should have eaten it right there, after building a small camp fire.

 

But she wasn't dead. And seemingly has recovered.

 

Yes, as a predator you want weak prey. Prey, not road kill, as previously dead things could be diseased.

But weakened prey... that's food.

Yes, I am. Or, Nature has given me a thinking mind and I do not operate solely on instinct. I can naturally make a decision because I can contemplate the future.

I was going to leave the chicken there and at least let the hawk get a meal of she decided to come back.

Fortunately for me, she seems to be recovering and my decision was rewarded. For now.

She may die tonight or tomorrow, and if so, an animal on my back lot will get a meal shortly after that.

I don't like killing things.

 

You didn't contemplate this future, the future you contemplated was that the chicken would die, there. This is a new contemplation, due to your injecting yourself into a natural act, and then removing yourself with no assurance that the natural act would have progressed to its natural end.

Incorrect. When I saw the chicken, I contemplated killing her, but remembered a story of a woman who took her dog to the vet because he was sick. Vet said he had horrible cancer and needed to be put down, but the woman being a Buddhist didn't want to euthanize her dog. Vet got very angry with her, saying he hated the Buddhist mentality that prolonged misery like that.

Dog went home, recovered and lived another full year before finally dying peacefully at home. Vet completely changed his tune after that. Anecdotal, but true.

That is what ran through my head in that 15 seconds I stood over the chicken and sang to her and contemplated what to do. Honest truth.

 

Ah, the 8th. I was hoping to tell a heart warming story and it has been put into a blender and chopped up!

 

I'm just thinking of how to make life better for the other chickens.

 

I vote for using the chicken as bait and to catch the hawk and keep it as a pet.
