It's not really a debate, and most well know it. Like we can all be guilty of doing, absolutely and including myself, it's an attempt to neutralize what we don't like, or prefer wasn't happening. We try to diminish it by an alternative explanation, invalidate it by blaming others, to excuse it as "two wrongs", to spin it as being positive for our position or negative for the opposition, and where all else fails, to minimize the damage via sheer and persistent obfuscation.
