I'll admit, took me a minute to get this one. I laughed when I caught up.

When she assumed the throne, Neyland was still coaching the Vols.

Neither of my parents was born yet. She was the only British monarch for my dad’s entire life.

Harry Truman was president.

Until Charles’s upcoming ceremony, hers was the only coronation to be televised. Charles’s will be the first ever on color TV.

 

Kinda cool that she managed to officially appoint (or whatever they call it over there) the new PM just days before her death. Although I typically could care less about the Royal Family, you can't deny that she was an iconic historical figure. It's mind blowing that she rubbed elbows with Winston Churchill. It's going to be strange getting used to the UK having a King now instead of a Queen.

 

She was associated with a lot of events due to her longevity and the absurdity of having a figurehead monarch. Perhaps due to my American-ness, I never got the hullabaloo about the royals, the ultimate welfare queens. I couldn't have cared less during all the massive attention paid to Diana when she was killed. Certainly sad, but people's weird fixation on those folks made it an absurd media circus.

People watch too many damn movies about being fantasized princesses or regal monarchs who are deftly scheming politicians when, in reality, they were mostly pampered, spoiled idiots who wasted a bunch of money on their extravagances while the peasants suffered. Yet, we're expected to bow in their presence as if they did something greater than merely being born. Man, I'm so glad we kicked those [uck fay]ers out. Of course, what would we do without a feel good Anne Hathaway movie so you too can pretend to be some Disney inspired princes!?!!

 

She was a good queen and dutiful patriot best I can tell.

Not great at raising kids though

You explained why so many care in your response. There's a reason there's a million Disney princesses. Most little girls are hard-wired to want to be one.

And then they grow up, and their fantasies become being a queen.

At it's essence, it's no different than me ordering a Heath Shuler 21 shersey on Wednesday. A continuation of our childhood dreams.

Now, the men that care about it? I got nothing unless it involves Pippa or her sister.
