I kind of don't get why people care either way, it's bold to call themselves "world champions" but no other basketball team can realistically claim that title (especially in years without a World Cup/Olympics)

 

It’s presumptuous and unearned. You want to call yourself World Champs? Then you’ve got to create something which actually includes the world, otherwise it’s just a league or national title.

 

So same with NFL? The World Series?

Yep, although the NFL has a lot more justification since there actually aren't any other leagues around the world. Maybe the Canadian league.

Still, you've got to play the world to say you conquered it.

 

NBA has Toronto. There are at least 2 American football leagues in Europe that I know of. Be consistent: are you saying the NFL should not call their champions world champions?

 

Where was I not consistent? Saying the NFL has a little more justification isn't assenting to them calling themselves World Champions. Unless you play something which is open to the world or are, essentially, the only ones playing the game on that level, you can't legitimately call yourselves the World Champions.
