About as close as Franklin is to Knoxville, probably.

If you believe this is the entirety of Marx's writings, then yes, you don't understand it. And, if you think his communism (though flawed and impractical) is reflected in the communism of the Soviet Union or China, then you are mistaken, as well. Marx's concepts go well beyond the simplistic and erroneous idea of "immoral" and "failed". A person doesn't have to be 100% perfect in order to be of pertinent and beneficial relevance. Marx was right in some areas, wrong in others, but he was correct to challenge the immoral and failed economic systems of his time.

Marx let his children and wife go hungry because he was so obsessed with being recognized for his theories. He refused many a paying job and pushed a way his community. In short he was POS that lived in a fantasy reality.

Adam Smith = my nigga....who was a hybrid socialist/capitalist which is a far more pragmatic theory...

If this was about his dad at all - then I agree we should release him - but its clearly not.. he's bags would be packed and he would be at Eastern Michigan as we speak if it were.

While I do see the point that Dooley can't afford to look bad here - I think he's doing the right thing if he weren't on the hot seat. Arnett is looking for a way out and is using a BS excuse.

Trying too hard, Unimane. I guarantee you Cotton knows Marx's writings at least as well as you do. He clearly disagrees with you, but it's not because he's ignorant.

  7. What communist nation should we look at to see this utopia you describe? Cuba? North Korea?

You are trying to make some pseudo intellectual point about the virtues of communism as it relates to in the case of student athletes seeking transfer, which is pretty silly.

I haven't read everything Marx wrote. He equates profit with exploitation. That is enough.

I read them in school, but thanks for the vote of confidence.

Neither of those are examples of a pure communist system, for the record.

Only if everyone has the same idea of what is meant by "exploitation." I exploit leverage to turn a screw into a board. That doesn't mean I have necessarily disenfranchised or enslaved the screwdriver when doing this.

Actually, that was you who brought up Marx. I never related communism to student-athletes, nor said communism was virtuous, just that Marx's writings did have some benefit, which they do. And, the system that created profit, particularly in his day, certainly created enormous amounts of exploitation. In any event, if I gave you too little credit for your sophistication, I apologize.

Marx's most important innovation was showing how individuals don't completely control the means of their existence. His analysis of alienation and false consciousness were important, though he couldn't solve the puzzle of the latter. He also was the chief inspiration for progressive taxation.

But he was not an economist, nor was Adam Smith. His most strident claim -- that the workers of the world would unite in a communist revolution -- has never happened anywhere in the world. Every revolution has occurred in non-industrialized countries with no bourgeoisie proper. This radically puts the cart before the horse and flies in the face of his most basic claim. Adam Smith also understood human nature in such a way that, frankly, Marx chooses to ignore. People are naturally drawn to exchanging goods and engaging in efficiency-maximizing behavior. Because of this communism will forever and always be on shaky ground no matter where it is practiced.

  15. Perhaps you could enlighten us as to which nations are examples of a pure communist system, just for the record.

I am unaware of any pure communist nation. There are no pure capitalist nations either that I'm aware of.

They don't and never have existed. Nor has a pure capitalist one.

  19. So, this 'communist utopia' that Unimane speaks of, it is pure fantasy?

Yes, as is any pure capitalist Eden.
